Assouline's ‘Self Portraits: From 1800 to the Present’ is Philippe Ségalot and Morgane Guillet's personal collection of self-portraits, alternating between iconic and lesser-known figures whose work moved them. Unfolding chronologically, it offers an intimate journey through art history, with each piece viewed at scale like a gallery of its own. More than sixty works span painting, photography, neon and found objects, from Claude Monet, Félix Vallotton and Gustave Caillebotte to David Hammons, Elizabeth Peyton and Steven Shearer. Some do not picture the artist at all, yet each shows what its maker chose to reveal and how they wished to be seen. Introduced by an introspective text from Robert Storr, former Dean of Yale School of Art.
